I would like to warmly invite you to a press breakfast on Thursday 29 September at 10am with Bas Eickhout, vice-chairman of the Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament.
Bas Eickhout will give an outlook on the upcoming meeting of The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the UN body responsible for international civil aviation. They meet from today (September 27) to October 7 in Montreal to agree on the creation of a global market-based mechanism to offset the industry’s growth in emissions from 2020 onwards. Bas Eickhout will participate in the final deliberations of the conference.
While the EU is expected to ratify the Paris Agreement soon, aviation emissions do not fall within the scope of the deal, making ICAO's decision of vital importance to meeting the well below 2 degree target agreed last year. The opinion of the European Parliament is crucial since they will have to give their consent to the deal and decide on whether to stop international flights (from and to the EU) from falling under European Trading System (ETS).
